چکیده

This paper presents a novel combination of synchronous, large coverage marine radar, calibrated pulsed Doppler radar, and video remote sensing observations from a nearshore field site. The data enable the analysis of the evolution and characteristics of the remotely observed signals from surf zone waves. The combination of different remote sensors allows a better discrimination between breaking and non-breaking waves, such a discrimination method offers the potential of more quantitative analyses of the wave breaking roller at field scales. In the present work, we concentrate on quantifying the contribution of the wave breaking roller to the total microwave backscatter and optical intensity signals. Analysis of the power outputs of both breaking and non-breaking events demonstrates that the backscatter from the wave roller is distinguishable from relict foam and appears to be independent of environmental conditions. Finally, we test a volumetric scattering model against the wave breaking observations. This is a new application for this type of scattering model. The model treats the wave roller as a multi-phase body where most of the scattering arises from a layer of water droplets representing the wave roller. The model shows an improved agreement with the data as compared to the traditional surface scattering model.

Weakly-compressible SPH and Experimental modeling of periodic wave breaking on a plane slope

Breaking waves have ability to transport large quantities of sediment and significant impact on coastal structures morphology. Hence, modeling of wave breaking is an important subject in coastal and marine engineering. In this research, the periodic wave breaking process on a plane slope is studied experimentally and numerically. Laboratory experiments were conducted to record water surface ele...

Integrating Marine Radar Observations into Nearshore Modeling Systems

The long-range goal of this research is to extend the scientific basis for extracting environmental information regarding the nearshore ocean from remote sensing data. In particular, we seek to quantify how both optical and remote sensors image the breaking of waves in shallow water. OBJECTIVES The objectives of this project are as follows: 1. Assemble a marine radar wave observation system sui...

Microwave radar cross sections and Doppler velocities measured in the surf zone

[1] The relationship between microwave imaging radar measurements of fluid velocities in the surf zone and shoaling, breaking, and broken waves is studied with field observations. Normalized radar cross section (NRCS) and Doppler velocity are estimated from microwave measurements at near-grazing angles, and in situ fluid velocities are measured with acoustic Doppler velocimeters (ADVs). Joint h...

Rotational surf zone modeling for Oðl4Þ Boussinesq–Green–Naghdi systems

A surf zone model is developed and tested based on the Oðl4Þ Boussinesq–Green–Naghdi system of Zhang et al. (2013). Because the model is fundamentally rotational, it uses fewer ad hoc assumptions than are found in many Boussinesq breaking wave systems. Eddy viscosity is used to describe both breaking dissipation and bottom friction, with breaking viscosities derived from the turbulent kinetic e...
